This was a volunteer, part-time, remote position at a non-profit where I served as the only web developer for the first two years. As one of the founding members of the organization, I initially served as Board Member and later shifted to the role of Website Coordinator & Co-Chair of the Website and Communication Committee.
- UX Research: developed a research agenda for iterative testing and implementation of the content navigation, including accessible and responsive web functionality; attended to SEO, site meta data, information architecture; developed usability testing procedures for custom taxonomies, member registration, member listserv, and guest accounts; led the effort to select and implement most suitable plugins or custom features
- Web Development: secured the domain and hosting for the organization; added custom functionality to the website via PHP coding to achieve custom taxonomies, filtering, and accessible components (could not be easily achieved with plugins); assisted with selection of several plugins for added functionality: user levels and permissions, guest contributors, custom author bios, payment processing, events maintenance, member listserv, and membership account management
- Technical Writing and Knowledge Management: assisted the Grantwriting Committee with grant proposal writing to secure funding for the non-profit by partnering with university grantwriting students; trained board members on how to install and modify plugins to successfully maintain the website in the future; led project to develop on-boarding guides and training videos for new board members (as part of a student service-learning project); updated internal knowledge base in Google Drive with new processes and procedures
Cynthia served as our lead technology and website coordinator and built
Jenelle M. Dembsey, Founding President OWCA
OnlineWritingCenters.org from scratch in 8 months. Her invaluable contributions include setting
up website hosting (and paying for this out of her own pocket), designing the website navigation
and layout, manually editing our website’s PHP, and implementing custom posts and taxonomies.
The Online Writing Centers Community was officially announced on July 23, 2018, and Cynthia
continued to support the community by advising on future initiatives and researching,
implementing, and trouble-shooting additional features for our website, including a listserv.
